The revenue of online video platforms from subscription fees and other paid models in Russia reached nearly ** billion Russian rubles in 2023, having increased by ** percent from the previous year. To compare, the advertising model contributed over *** billion Russian rubles to the total revenue.

The rise of SVOD in Russia

Russian VOD platforms’ revenue was dominated by the subscription monetization model rather than advertising. In 2022, SVOD occupied ** percent of the total over-the-top (OTT) video-on-demand (VOD) market revenue in the country. Across the whole region of Eastern Europe, the SVOD revenue was expected to increase by nearly *** billion U.S. dollars between 2023 and 2029. 

VOD consumption in Russia

Nearly one quarter of Russian households and older used VOD platforms at least once a month on average over the period from May to July 2021. In the corresponding period of the previous year, the reach was higher due to the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The most active consumers of VOD platforms were 18-to-24-year-olds, one fifth of whom streamed films and series almost daily. Seven out of ten Russians reported having used trial subscriptions for video content.
