When asked about the reasons behind the construction of the Berlin Wall, nearly one quarter of respondents in Russia saw it as a way to separate West and East Germany and to prevent border-crossing, according to the survey conducted in 2019. Other participants saw the wall as an expression of the Cold War, as a barrier between socialist and capitalist ideologies, or as a means for the Soviet Union to defend the Communist regime from the Western influence.
