In 2020, Basilicata was the Italian region where the water losses were highest, amounting to over ** percent of the drinking water in the network. The regions of Abruzzo, Sicily, Molise, and Sardinia followed. In these regions, only **** of the drinking water volume reached end-users. Water leakage was caused by the aging distribution network, which was an issue in most of the national territory: considering the whole country, the average water losses amounted to ** percent of the volume treated and put in the distribution system.
