Online retail shop Lazada led the ranking of online stores in the Philippines with the greatest number of Facebook followers during the first quarter of 2022. The Singapore-based online e-commerce site had approximately million followers on its Facebook page during this period. Shoppee came in second place with about million Facebook followers.

What caused the surge of online shopping activities?

Restrictions in movement due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected the retail and trade sector worldwide. With several non-essential shops forced to close, most Filipino consumers resorted to online shopping during this period. Aside from food and groceries, personal hygiene products as well as clothing, apparel, and fashion accessories were the frequently bought products from e-commerce sites.

Demographics of online shoppers

On top of being the leading social media platform in the Philippines, most Filipino online users have been engaging with advertisements on Facebook, making it even more important for brands to increase their presence on the social media site. Majority of the online shoppers in the country were aged 25 to 34 and female users tend to click more on Facebook ads compared to their male counterparts.
