Film industry in Italy - statistics & facts
Probably even Italian neorealists 鈥 and their films full of raw, sober, difficult aesthetics and themes 鈥 would grapple with depicting the hardships the movie industry in Italy has been going through. The impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the segment proved to be not only unparalleled but long-lasting. After an annual decline of 71 percent in 2020, the box office revenue in Italy went down again in 2021, before slowly rebounding to reach almost 500 million euros by 2023. The performance within the Eurozone was also lackluster. Preliminary data shows that, among countries that use the euro, Italy ranked ninth by box office revenue in 2023, behind countries like France, Germany, and Norway. The difference between Italy and the eight place 鈥 Spain鈥 amounted to about ten million euros.
