Medians are calculated using 2,500 U.S. dollars income intervals. Beginning with 2009 income data, the Census Bureau expanded the upper income intervals used to calculate medians to 250,000 U.S. dollars or more. Medians falling in the upper open-ended interval are plugged with 鈥�$250,000.鈥� Before 2009, the upper open-ended interval was 100,000 U.S. dollars and a plug of 鈥�$100,000鈥� was used.

U.S. citizens with a doctorate had the highest median household income in 2024, at **聽U.S. dollars. In comparison, those with less than a 9th grade education made significantly less money, at *聽U.S. dollars.聽

Household income

Since 1990, median household income in the United States has fluctuated,but it has increased to more than * U.S. dollars in recent years. Among the states, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maryland reported the highest median household incomes in the United States.

Household income and ethnicity

The median income of non-Hispanic white households in the United States exhibited an overall upward trend from 1990 onward, followed by a decline beginning in 2019. The median income of Hispanic households was much lower than that of white, non-Hispanic households.聽Income inequality remains a persistent and complex issue in the United States, particularly as ethnicity represents a significant contributing factor. Structural and systemic forms of racial inequality contribute to disparities in income among non-White populations, which in turn can limit economic mobility and opportunities for advancement.
