Chemical industry in Japan - statistics & facts
The Japanese chemical industry is the fourth largest worldwide, following China, the United States, and Germany, just ahead of South Korea and India. Since other industries such as the transportation machinery industry and the automotive industry are dependent on materials provided by the chemical industry, it is one of the most important and largest manufacturing industries in Japan. Furthermore, the chemical industry was one of the largest employers in the manufacturing sector in Japan, providing work for over 962 thousand people in 2024. Despite the strong international position, sales of the Japanese chemical industry have stagnated since 2020 and even declined by about seven percent in 2024.
