Ammonia is one of the key players among fertilizers. It binds the most important crop nutrient nitrogen and makes it available for nitrogen fertilizer production. Ammonia is not only an important base material for other fertilizers but it can also be applied directly to soil as a plant nutrient. Accordingly, nitric acid and ammonia represented the chemical fertilizer with the largest consumption volume in Japan.
 Agrochemical usage in the Japanese farming industry
Since the farming industry in Japan focuses on crop production, the majority of shipped agricultural chemicals were used for vegetables and upland farming as well as paddy rice. Crop protection chemicals such as herbicides and insecticides had the largest amount of registered agricultural chemicals. This category of agrochemicals helps improve the quality of crops by killing specific plants or pests.
