Solid waste management in Japan - statistics & facts
Even though the volume of generated waste has declined, Japan has remained one of the leading countries for generating solid municipal waste. Household waste represented the largest amount of generated waste, with plastic packaging making up the majority. The widespread usage of single-use plastic products has led to large amounts of plastic waste. Furthermore, Japan generates huge amounts of electronic waste. Even though Japan implemented an electronic waste recycling program, electronic waste is often dumped illegally, contributing to waste pollution. Consequently, waste pollution has become a major environmental issue.
