E-books are electronic versions of books, which are available for paid download through various online retailers, from specialized e-book shops to bookstores familiar from actual shopping trips, as well as larger online platforms like Amazon. Various devices are used for e-book consumption, among them not just e-book readers, which are still the first choice for many, but also smartphones and tablets. In 2021, 10.3 million people in Germany read books on electronic devices. This is part of a wider digitalization trend across markets and sectors. While plenty of people still enjoy buying and reading a printed book, e-book consumption on devices enabling access and storage is in line with modern mobility and travel patterns, daily schedules and accessing literature on the go.
