Natural disasters in the Philippines - statistics & facts
In 2024, more than a million Filipinos were forced from their homes by natural disasters, placing the Philippines once again at the heart of the global climate crisis. Each year, around 20 tropical cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility, and the country endures an average of 20 earthquakes every single day. This constant exposure makes the Philippines one of the most disaster-prone nations globally 鈥 a reality that costs not only lives but also livelihoods and economic stability.
Earthquakes are another constant threat. In 2024, more than 19,000 tremors were recorded, ranging from mild to moderately strong. The CARAGA region experienced the highest number of incidents, underscoring its seismic vulnerability. The Philippines is also home to nine active volcanoes, nearly half of which lie on Luzon.
The Philippines鈥 geography ensures that storms, earthquakes, and volcanic activity will remain a part of life. But with stronger policies, greater investment in mitigation, and sustained adaptation measures, the country can better protect its people and reduce the devastating impacts of these natural hazards.
The true cost of natural calamities
When disasters strike, the damage extends far beyond immediate loss of life. Roads, bridges, power lines, water systems, farms, and even schools and hospitals are left in ruins. In 2024, total damages exceeded 43 billion Philippine pesos, most of it from destroyed infrastructure. That year saw 11 storms hit the country, with Cyclones Kristine and Leon causing the worst destruction. By comparison, Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in 2013 鈥 the most catastrophic in recent memory 鈥 inflicted over 95 billion pesos in damage, killing nearly 7,000 people and leaving about 30,000 missing.Earthquakes are another constant threat. Despite contributing relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions from energy, the Philippines has committed to the 1.5掳C global warming limit. Yet challenges remain, especially with deforestation and the continued heavy use of coal. In 2024, the government allocated approximately 457 billion pesos to climate change initiatives 鈥 with a striking 97 percent going toward adaptation efforts such as disaster readiness, rather than mitigation.
