Prestige/luxury cosmetics market worldwide - statistics & facts
While the vast majority of people buy their cosmetics in places like drugstores and supermarkets, there is a special class of cosmetics for those who want the luxury experience when it comes to makeup and skincare. The market for luxury and prestige beauty generated revenues of roughly 72 billion U.S. dollars in 2024 and this figure is expected to grow to approximately 89 billion U.S. dollars by 2029. A great part of the success of prestige products can be attributed to premium skincare products, which are forecast to register a value of nearly 34 billion U.S. dollars by the year 2029. As of 2024, several countries recorded notable results within the prestige cosmetics and fragrances market, but the United States was without a doubt the most prominent, boasting the highest revenues worldwide.
A multi-billion-dollar powerhouse in the U.S.
The United States is indeed home to a 36-billion-dollar prestige beauty industry. One of the fastest-growing segments in the industry is prestige hair care, which recorded sales growth of about 10 percent in the first quarter of 2026. In that same period, dollar sales growth for the U.S. prestige beauty market came in at six percent, roughly in line with the mass beauty market's seven percent gain.
Luxury giants navigating a shifting landscape
Luxury cosmetic brands, such as Est茅e Lauder and Lanc么me (L'Or茅al), are among some of the most valuable personal care brands in the world. Est茅e Lauder saw a substantial increase in sales between 2008 and 2022, but revenue has since declined, dropping to around 14 billion U.S. dollars in fiscal year 2025. Nearly half of Est茅e Lauder's revenue is generated by skincare, making it the company's largest product category. Meanwhile, sales of L'Or茅al's product category Luxe have also increased over time, and the segment currently makes up one of the largest shares of the company's consolidated sales.
The U.S. prestige beauty industry keeps on growing, though at a slower pace than in recent years. Global forecasts also predict positive results, showing that, despite rising prices, consumers are still fond of these products. However, the narrowing gap between prestige and mass market growth signals that competitiveness and price sensitivity have become pressing concerns for luxury beauty players.
