Digital healthcare, defined as the use of information and communication technology in the healthcare sector, is a tool that can be more cost-effective than traditional means, improve quality of care, and decrease inequalities. Although digitalization in the healthcare sector started slowly worldwide several years ago, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the acceleration of digital transformation in healthcare. In Italy, electronic health records, online payments, and digital prescriptions, were the first digital innovations implemented across the country. Further progress has certainly been made more recently, with increasing percentages of doctors and nurses adopting digital healthcare technologies.
