European medical technology industry - statistics & facts
In Europe, 7.6 percent of all annual healthcare expenditure was spent on medical technology. Any equipment that functions to prevent, diagnose, or treat illnesses and diseases is classed as medical technology. The market is worth billions of U.S. dollars worldwide, with Europe an established medtech center alongside North America. Germany has the largest market share in the European medtech industry, followed by France and the United Kingdom. Despite its size, Ireland is a hub for medical technology companies, with many of the largest global companies having a presence on the island. It has the highest per capita medtech employment in Europe, at around 90 employees per 10,000 inhabitants.
