Government spending in European countries - Statistics & Facts
European economies are widely recognized for their comprehensive welfare systems, which rely heavily on government spending to finance social security and essential public services. However, within Europe, there are notable differences in how countries approach public spending. According to the latest data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Finland is projected to have the highest public spending-to-GDP ratio among EU member states in 2024, with government expenditure reaching 57.4 percent of its gross domestic product. On the other end of the spectrum, Ireland is expected to have the lowest ratio, at just 23.4 percent.
