Compared to other regions in the world, Europeans generally enjoy a higher quality of life due to relatively high income and wealth levels, as well as a stable work-life balance. These factors partially explain why European countries, particularly Nordic nations, consistently are among the top five in the global ranking of happiness. Other rankings, like the OECD life satisfaction index, also highlights Europe’s high living quality, with countries like Finland, Iceland, and Denmark leading the index with scores exceeding 7.5 out of 10 points of life satisfaction. However, over the last decade, unforeseen crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, rising energy prices, and high inflation (in large part due to the Russia-Ukraine War) have severely impacted quality of life across the continent. Rising costs of living, particularly in essential areas such as food, housing, and energy, have strained household finances and led to a deterioration in living conditions for many. As a result, an increasing number of Europeans struggle to afford basic necessities.
