Residential construction in the United States - statistics & facts

Many cities and regions in the United States have seen housing scarcity and soaring home prices in the past couple of years. Middle-sized population centers such as Syracuse and Anchorage were some of the metropolitan areas with the most job openings per building permit in the three years leading up to December 2024. Having over seven times more job openings than building permits indicates a significant amount of stress on the housing market. That means that residential construction projects were unable to meet the demand for housing in those areas.
