Based in Detroit, General Motors Company has consistently ranked among the leading automakers worldwide in terms of revenue. In its 2025 fiscal year, General Motors (GM) generated around 185 billion U.S. dollars in revenue. In the year prior, the company recorded its highest revenue since 2013.
In December 2024, the General Motors Company (GM) stopped funding its self-driving car subsidiary Cruise, with a restructuring planned for 2025. In parallel, the American automotive manufacturer is increasing its investments in artificial intelligence, including by collaborating with NVIDIA for their next-generation vehicles. These changes come after economic losses were recorded in 2023, amid the United Auto Workers union strike, and have contributed to GM’s improving 2024 financial performance.Â
Most of GM’s revenue in 2024 came from its North American operations, which represented the largest share of GM’s overall earnings that year. In the United States, GM reported market shares of nearly 17 percent. The company is the automaker of several best-selling cars and light trucks. Aside from high sales volume in the United States, GM brands also recorded a good track record with customers. In 2025, Cadillac and Buick ranked in the top ten light vehicle brands with the highest consumer satisfaction, with Chevrolet and GMC also in the top fifteen.
After the United States, China was also a lucrative market for the American automaker. General Motors Company sold around 1.8 million vehicles in China, which represents GM's largest market in terms of vehicle sales after the United States. Although most of its cars are assembled in the United States, GM also manufactures a large percentage of cars in Asia. Most of GM’s cars dedicated to the Chinese market are produced locally, and a Buick was the first car to be produced in Shanghai’s GM plant in 1998. The automaker’s joint venture with SAIC and Wuling was also successful on the Chinese market.Â
Lately, the automaker has committed to becoming carbon-neutral in its global operations and products. In line with this goal, GM spent around 9.2 billion U.S. dollars in research and development in 2024. On a global scale, these investments translated in the Wuling HongGuang Mini EV, manufactured by GM’s joint venture with SAIC and Wuling, being the sixth best-selling plug-in EV model worldwide in 2025. However, GM has faced stiff competition in its home market. In the U.S., Tesla dominates the EV market with their Model Y and Model 3 in first and second ranking, respectively. With nearly 58,000 sales, the Chevrolet Equinox was the third best-selling plug-in electric car in 2025, though this volume was far below Tesla's Model 3. However, while GM has since expanded its electric vehicle offering, it also delayed production of a fully electric model of its Silverado pickup to mid-2026. As electric vehicle demand slows down, this could increase challenges for GM to break into the market. Despite consistent investments in research and development, General Motors Company has recorded mixed results in the market.
