Scope 1 include direct emissions from fossil fuel combustions, mostly natural gas. Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from electricity consumption for company operations generated through externally purchased steam. Emissions taken into consideration include carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.Â

In 2023, the General Motors Company's Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions remained the same as the previous year, at 2.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. This was an increase of 200,000 metric tons of CO2e from 2021. GM's sustainability goals includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 72 percent in 2035 as compared to its 2018 baseline.
