The cost of college in the United States - statistics & facts
In the United States, university graduates are financially struggling as the cost of higher education increases. Tuition and fees on average have almost tripled since 2000, totaling 14,688 U.S. dollars as of 2023. Although attending college is often associated with higher earning potential, the cost of attendance has increased significantly faster than wages. U.S. universities are also considerably more expensive compared to other high-income countries, where tuition is typically free or subsidized. For a four-year degree, American students could expect to pay an average of 30,884 U.S. dollars for tuition, fees, room, and board. Despite the expense, the U.S. still sees high rates of college graduates. However, this growth is not caused by higher education becoming more financially accessible; on the contrary, the rising demand for higher education is likely contributing to the rising cost.
Student loans may also be affecting the cost of college, despite originally intended to alleviate the issue. As of Q4 2024, student debt totaled over 1.77 trillion U.S. dollars, with borrowers owing almost 40,000 U.S. dollars on average. Taking on large debts has become necessary to cover costs at many colleges; at leading universities, annual tuition and fees ranged from 46,503 to 71,312 U.S dollars in the 2024/25 academic year. Princeton University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were the top ranked, requiring 62,400 and 62,396 U.S. dollars respectively.
While the debt rises, the amount of loans provided to students has decreased in recent years. Increasing rates of student debt have been met with an unstable job market, making repayment more difficult. Loan repayment often begins shortly upon graduation, which may corner graduates into underemployment or careers unrelated to their field of study to afford payments. Over 40 percent of recent college graduates were underemployed as of June 2024, meaning they were working in a job that typically does not require a bachelor’s degree.
As Americans face dramatically high levels of student debt, many are questioning whether the benefits of higher education still exceed the costs. More than half of Americans in 2023 agreed that college is now more of a gamble that may not pay off. Although earnings still increase with a college degree, the return on investment for younger generations with limited resources may not be as high; as of 2022, around a quarter of Gen Z with student debt were unable to afford saving for retirement or emergencies.
Government aid intended to help lower-income individuals afford college has not kept up with costs either; the Federal Pell Grant only covered around 13 percent in public institutions and 31 percent privately in 2023/24. This program has also been criticized as middle-class families often earn too much to be eligible, while not earning enough to comfortably cover the cost of higher education. Consequently, many students have become increasingly reliant on loans they cannot afford to pay back, indicating that taking on debts for a degree is not always worth the risk. As costs continue to increase, Americans are likely to remain hesitant about pursuing higher education, especially if the government neglects to offer further assistance.
