TotalEnergies is France’s largest company and among the world’s ten largest energy companies by revenue. As a publicly traded company, it is counted among the so-called Big Oil, or oil supermajors, alongside other industry giants such as fellow Europe-based Shell and BP. It is the largest investor in low-carbon energy sources among its competitors, spending around one third of its total capital expenditure on diversifying its business profile and reaching net zero targets. This was also the primary driver behind its rebranding in May 2021, moving away from the name Total it had held since the 1980s.
