Mental health in Sweden - statistics & facts
Mental health is one of the most prevalent health issues in Sweden. Nearly 12 percent of the 10.6-million population consumes antidepressants. Over 1.2 million patients were prescribed antidepressants in 2024. This represents the highest recorded number during the documented period and highlights the current mental health struggles in the country. There are ongoing debates about the high rates of antidepressants along with lacking therapeutic care and whether this situation constitutes a mental health epidemic or reflects broader structural issues. When asked about the diseases or limitations they face, many Swedes identify mental health conditions as their primary concern. Among those surveyed, one-third reported experiencing burnout, depression, or anxiety.
