Mental health in India - statistics & facts
With socioeconomic and geopolitical concerns mixed with the constant stress of daily life, Indians face a serious mental health crisis. Millions suffer from anxiety and depression across the country.
Despite technological advancements for greater connectivity, most individuals feel isolated and disconnected from their communities, affecting not only physical and emotional wellbeing but can also lead to premature mortality. The Indian government recognizes mental illnesses as a form of disability and is one of the leading causes of disability among Indians. However, it remains largely overlooked, despite governmental initiatives to improve healthcare access and quality.
Even outside of public healthcare, digital solutions have increasingly become vital in addressing challenges in the Indian mental healthcare market. Therapy and counseling platforms play a crucial role in providing accessible and personalized support to meet diverse mental health needs, but more accessible to those with salaried, corporate employment.
This alarming disparity is evident in the latest National Mental Health Survey (NMHS). This is primarily due to a lack of public awareness, as well as a shortage of mental health professionals and limited resources available within the country.
Despite growing awareness, the stigma behind addressing mental health in India often results in inadequate support and care for those affected. What’s worse, it could result in suppression of mental illnesses and stressors, making the situation worse. This is true especially for men, who fear judgment and avoid seeking help.
The COVID-19 pandemic has helped bring the topic to the forefront among Indians, with Gen Z and millennials in urban areas more open to therapy and spending time on mental wellness apps. This shift in attitude is also reflected in workplaces embracing mental wellness programs.
Although India is working towards raising awareness and expanding mental health services and coverage, continuous efforts are important to overcome current challenges and ensure effective care is accessible to everyone.

More recently, with digitalization initiatives across the country, Tele MANAS (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States), offering telephone-based counseling, consultation, and other mental health services nationwide.
