In 2024, demand for electricity in Europe increased to over 5000 terawatt-hours, the highest amount recorded since 2021. To reliably satisfy current and future electricity demand, the enhancement of interconnectivity across European power grids remains a critical strategic priority for system planners and policymakers in the region. For example, in 2024, Luxembourg had an interconnectivity level of 164 percent, leading among European countries. This exceptionally high interconnectivity supports Luxembourg鈥檚 electricity system, which in 2023 relied on 5.2 terawatt -hours of imports due to limited domestic generation, helping to satisfy one of the highest per capita electricity demands in Europe.
