Is Hindi the national language of India?

In the increasing political discourse about what makes someone in India an "Indian", the identity behind language has been a source of constant debate across the country. Fueled most recently by the National Education Policy (NEP) introduced in 2020 and now in stages of implementation, states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala have cited reasons against standing by the policy. This heated debate topic originated more than 70 years ago at the time of India鈥檚 independence, when Hindi was chosen to be one of two official languages.
