By 2030, all baby boomers will have reached 65 years of age, which makes one in five people in the United States aged 65 years or over. With such a high share of the population elderly (in comparison, the share of the elderly population was roughly one in 20 in 1930), the need for long-term care (LTC) is greater than ever. Assisted living is a type of long-term care in which adults, mostly older than 75 years, receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, or toileting. Meal and laundry services are usually available as well as social activities. With over one million residents living in assisted living communities, this sector supports just slightly less than the number of people living in nursing homes.
