Payment methods in Niger - statistics & facts
Following sanctions due to the 2023 coup d’etat in Niger, banks in the country were overly filled, ATMs were quickly emptied, and fund withdrawals were restricted, leaving the cash-dependent population in overall despair. For a country heavily dependent on physical cash usage compared to other means of payment, commercial and financial transactions freeze in the absence of circulating currency. In fact, the use of credit cards and debit cards for payments in the country is very rare, with only between one and 2.2 percent of the population owning either a credit card, a debit card, or both.
