Global electric power industry emissions - statistics & facts
The power sector is the world’s biggest climate polluter. Though there has been significant growth in renewable energy deployment in recent decades, 60 percent of electricity is still generated by burning carbon-intensive fossil fuels like coal and natural gas, which emit more than a quarter of annual greenhouse gas emissions. The power industry must now continue its clean transformation as it pushes toward its overarching goal of reaching net-zero emissions by mid-century.
