Public transportation in the Netherlands - Statistics & facts
In 2021, around 8.2 percent of kilometers traveled by land in the Netherlands were covered by public transportation. While this is considerable, Dutch people traveled further by bike than by public transportation within the same year, and passenger cars accounted for more than two-thirds of passenger transport. On average, the Dutch traveled around 0.6 kilometers on urban public transit (bus, metro, tram) each weekday in 2021, a figure that more than doubled for passengers traveling on trains between cities.
