Cancer in Russia - statistics & facts
Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in Russia, having accounted for approximately 192 deaths per 100,000 of the country's population in 2022. Cancer, also referred to as a malignant neoplasm or tumor, is an abnormal growth of cells caused by changes in gene expression as a result of genetic or environmental factors. Population aging as well as growth in factors linked to socio-economic development, including stress, air pollution, and unhealthy diet, increase the cumulative risk of developing cancer. In 2023, over 674,000 Russians were diagnosed with cancer for the first time, an increase from the previous year.
