Discount grocery stores, although not as popular as in Europe and especially Germany where many leading retailers originate from, have emerged as significant players in the U.S. food retail market. The United States is the second-largest market for this retail channel, and is expected to continue growing. The increasing cost of living and budget limitations resulting from the rise in inflation rates, may be one reason behind the growth of the discount grocery market in the U.S. This can be seen in the behavior of grocery shoppers, with close to one fifth of respondents in the country shopping at discount stores to combat higher prices, and with a noticeable increase in the frequency of visits to these affordable format stores, particularly during periods of higher inflation.
