Nestled in between the likes of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and the North Sea, Belgium boasts the 12th largest population in Europe. As of January 2022, almost 11.58 million people called Belgium their home, which has increased by approximately 100,000 every year since 2009. Around 117,900 births were registered in 2021 in Belgium, compared to 112,300 deaths in the same year, indicating a natural population increase of around 5,600. In line with improvements in modern medicine, life expectancy has gradually increased in recent years, before experiencing a small dip following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This has also contributed to the aging population seen across much of the western world, as the median age rose rapidly from 40.85 years in 2010 to almost 42 years in 2021 and the population aged 65 years and older rose from 1.8 million in 2009 to 2.3 million in 2022.
