* A finished consultant episode (FCE) is a continuous period of admitted patient care under one consultant within one healthcare provider. FCEs are counted against the year in which they end. Figures do not represent the number of different patients, as a person may have more than one episode of care within the same stay in hospital or in different stays in the same year.

Excludes 286,000 FCE where gender is unknown.

In 2024/25, the total number of finished consultant episodes (FCEs) in NHS hospitals in England amounted to over  while the number of finished admission episodes (FAEs) or admissions was roughly **. In this period, the number of FCA was highest in the age group 75 to 79 years for both men and women. The large disparity between admissions for men and women between the ages of 20 and 44 years can be accounted for by maternity services used by women of child-giving ages.
