The definition of algae used by the FAO includes a broad range of aquatic plants, ranging from multicellular macroalgae (e.g. seaweeds) to unicellular microalgae and Cyanobacteria.
In 2023, the production volume of algae in aquaculture in China was estimated at around million metric tons live weight. The most common type of farmed algae are seaweeds. Algae are mainly farmed in marine or coastal aquaculture. Inland aquaculture in China contributed only around ** tons of algae production in 2023.
