At over 155 million gallons, Californians drank far more wine than any other state in 2021. Florida, which ranked second, consumed roughly half that amount.

Wine consumption by category

Approximately 90 percent of the wine consumed in the United States was table wine. This type of wine is non-sparkling, quite affordable, and suitable for drinking with a meal. The second-most commonly enjoyed type of wine was Champagne and sparkling, which accounted for a consumption share of nearly ten percent that year. Vermouth and aperitif wines were consumed the least by Americans.

Wine country

Almost half of all the wine produced in the United States was specifically made in California. The western state was home to over six thousand wineries. Washington stood in second with a comparatively small 1,383 wineries.
