Classifications are based on the Classification of individual consumption by purpose (COICOP):

At home consumption is based on household consumption expenditure of food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.1) and alcoholic beverages (0.21) purchased for at-home consumption.

Out-of-home consumption is based on household consumption expenditure on catering services (11.1) which includes canteens (11.1.2) and restaurants, cafe's etc. (11.1.1). These values include alcoholic beverages sold for immediate consumption away from home by hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars, kiosks, street vendors, automatic vending machines, etc. Excludes tobacco purchases.

Households in the United Kingdom generally spend more on eating and drinking at home than eating out; According to 2019 figures on household consumption expenditure, ** percent of all food and beverage expenditure (including alcoholic beverages) was for at-home consumption compared to ** percent spent on restaurants and other out-of-home food services. At the start of 2020 this trend continued, with at-home consumption accounting for ** percent of food and drink spending in the first 3 months of the year.
