During the surveyed time period between August 2016 and February 2017, more than ** percent of the respondents who smoked currently stated that they believed that smoking caused serious illness. A share of approximately ** percent of the non-smoking respondents stated that they believed that others smoking habits could cause serious health ailments among children.
In order to discourage people from smoking, the Central Government of the south Asian nation, in its Union Budget for fiscal year 2020, had proposed to levy higher taxes on cigarettes.
