A great part of the Italian audience watched the soccer World Cup games on Mediaset channels. During the last edition in 2018, the most watched match was Belgium against Brazil, with an audience share of 44.5 percent. In fact, television was the preferred platform to watch the World Cup, according to this survey.

Soccer world championship

  Apart from watching it on TV, the Italian public had controversial opinions about the World Cup held in Russia in 2018. For instance, only 80 percent of respondents answering a poll in May 2018 thought that the event was safe for visitors. Less than 60 percent of Italians stated that they believed travelling to Russia for the World Cup was safe.  

Attending sports events

  Public security during the World Cup was doubted and maybe would have discouraged the minor percentage of sport lovers who would travel for important sporting events. However, 46 percent of respondents in the survey stated they would be willing to travel to see soccer matches, overtaking other sports events like car racing or tennis (twelve and eight percent respectively).
