Alienating or pricing out committed supporters would not just be felt at the ticket office or club shop – the unique atmospheres they create also help the league to sell its product to broadcasters. Ultimately, Premier League clubs need to find a way to pair continued revenue growth without killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
