In 2022, there was higher alcohol consumption and abuse among young male adults in comparison to their female counterparts in Italy. Indeed, around ** percent of males aged 20 to 24 showed binge drinking behavior, compared to ** percent of females in the same age group. A similar trend can be observed among binge drinkers aged 65 years and older.
In 2021, most alcohol-related emergency department visits in Italy were among individuals aged between 18 and 24 years both for females and males. Roughly ** percent of patients in this case were Italian, while the second most common nationality was Romanian.
Although the consumption of alcohol in Italy is traditionally associated with the consumption of food, the share of individuals consuming alcoholic beverages between meals was very high in 2022, especially in regions in the north of the country. In 2021, wine was the most consumed alcoholic beverage by both female and male consumers.
