The Italian potato chips market reached a sales value of *** million euros in the supermarket sales channel as of 2017. Bigger hypermarkets followed with around ** million euros, while the retail sales value reached ** million euros in discounters. The overall market of potato chips was worth *** million euros as of January 29, 2017.

 Salty snacks

Salty snacks as potato chips are usually consumed at aperitif time. A 2019 poll showed that ** percent of Italian consumers had this habit, while ** percent of respondents preferred to eat them during a break. In the occasion of out-of-home consumption, a beer or a cocktail would be the preferred beverage to drink chips with, at least among millennials. The survey showed that only ** percent of millennials asked would have a glass of wine.

 From vending machines

Aside from the already mentioned distribution channels, a significant volume of salty snacks is distributed through vending machines in Italy. In 2016 alone, *** million units of salty snacks were sold in the vending industry.
