According to the source, the Consumer Price Index has been compiled monthly by the Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for the purpose of measuring changes of various goods and services purchased by households all over Japan, thereby analyzing the movement of prices in time series. The year for the base and weights of current index is 2020, and in principle the index is compiled, based on retail prices of each municipality and item obtained from the Retail Price Survey, using the Laspeyres-type formula.
In 2024, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of food in Japan increased by **** points compared to the base year 2020. The CPI implies that food prices for Japanese households has increased significantly in the recent years, impacted by inflation and rising producer prices.
