In 2024, some 66.8 million passengers utilized Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to fly to and from their desired destination. This was an eight percent decrease compared to the previous year, when passenger traffic amounted to roughly 62 million.

Aircraft movements at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Considering the number of aircraft movements at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the volume was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic too. In 2020, total aircraft movements amounted to only 227,000. However, according to a stakeholder agreement from 2008, Schiphol is not allowed to further expand and are limited to 500,000 aircraft movements per year until 2020. Afterwards, Schiphol can expand if they reduce the noise pollution. A way to realize further growth is to shift a part of Schiphol’s operations and capacity towards Lelystad Airport (owned by the Schiphol Group). According to a survey regarding the expansion to Lelystad Airport by 2020, nearly half of the respondents agreed with the plans, whereas 35 percent of the individuals were against such an expansion.

How do passenger travel to and from Amsterdam Airport

In 2019, most of the passengers used public transport to travel to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. More than 47 percent of the respondents indicated that they went by public transport, whereas nearly 20 percent got dropped off by car. Parking at the airport got less and less popular, as it decreased annually from 13.6 percent in 2013 to 10.3 percent in 2018.
