The number of new HIV cases in Norway was fluctuating over the years, and in 2023 it was at 332 cases, an increase compared to the previous year. In 2023, Norway had a higher number of new HIV cases than both of its neighboring countries, Denmark and Sweden.
Decline in number of new cases
The number of new HIV cases was up at a peak in 2008 when there were 299 new cases. Since then it had gradually decreased until 2021, with tops in 2011 and 2014 in-between. According to Folkehelseinstituttet (Norwegian Institute of Public health), the reason behind the decrease have been use of condom, early diagnosis, quick start of treatment and the access to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). However, we observed a new peak in 2023.Â
Increase in other sexually transmitted diseases
Whilst the number of HIV cases gradually decreased in Norway until 2021, the pattern for other sexually transmitted diseases did was different. The number of syphilis cases fluctuated but generally increased during the period from 2009 to 2022, and the number chlamydia cases peaked in 2022.
