The number of companies responsible for cut flowers in the Netherlands decreased by half during the last decade and a half. The biggest decrease was seen in 2010, when there were *** less flower growing companies than the year before. In 2022, there were around *** flower growing companies in the Netherlands, less than half of the number of companies in 2007. That said, it is a higher figure compared to the past four years. Contrary to what this statistic suggests, the revenue of flower sales actually increased even when the number of companies decreased.

Market consolidation

The decrease of the amount of flower growing companies in the Netherlands should be regarded in the context of market consolidation. While more than half of the growers officially closed their businesses, the other half more than doubled in size. This points to a trend of merging and upscaling in the flower growing industry. Since 2009, the average physical size of the glasshouses used by flower growing companies increased from roughly *** hectares of glass to *** hectares in more recent years.

The decrease in the number of growers was not uncommon when looking at the agricultural sector in its entirety. For instance, the number of greenhouse horticulture farms in the Netherlands also nearly halved since 2007.
