Between 2007 and 2021, the number of greenhouse horticulture farms in the Netherlands nearly halved, from over to just ***. This is not an isolated trend. In roughly the same period, other types of agricultural farms also decreased in number – although they did not experience such a steep fall as the greenhouse farms. The number of arable farms for example decreased from over * to just *, and the number of fruit farms fell by more than *** as well in the last 10 years.

 Organic farming is booming

  Going against the general trend, the number of organic farms in the Netherlands actually enjoyed a growth of more than *** farms in the last decade, from in 2011 to in 2021. Similarly, the number of organic tree nurseries more than doubled, reaching ** in 2017, the latest year with data available.

Export of agricultural products

  Although the number of production sites is decreasing, the Netherlands remains one of the largest exporters of agricultural products in the world. In 2021, the value of agri-food products exported from the country reached more than 100 billion euros. Neighboring country Germany was the most important trading partner for agricultural products. In 2021, a large share of the agricultural products exported from the Netherlands was destined for Germany.
