Total tourism expenditure in the Netherlands (including inbound and domestic spending) amounted to approximately 46.5 billion euros in 2020, dropping sharply over the previous year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, domestic tourism reported the highest expenditure in 2020, reaching around 32 billion euros. When looking at the holiday expenditures by different household types, couples with children spend the most in 2019, with an average expenditure of over 2,800 euros. Meanwhile, single travelers spent the least money on holidays, with an average spending of almost 1,500 euros.

COVID-19 impact on inbound tourism

The total number of tourists that visited the Netherlands rose annually between 2014 and 2019, peaking at over 20 million. In 2020, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it was estimated that the number of inbound tourists dropped sharply to about seven million.

Hotels are popular among inbound tourists in the Netherlands

When categorizing the inbound tourism by accommodation in the Netherlands, most of the tourists stayed in hotels in 2018, with more than 14 million travelers choosing this accommodation type. In that year, 3.6 million inbound visitors preferred to stay in holiday villages and campsites.
