In an age where brick-and-mortar stores face increasing competition from online stores, the supermarket sector in the Netherlands is still steadily growing. Between 2014 and 2023, the number of supermarkets in the Netherlands increased year-on-year, from just over supermarkets in 2014 to roughly in 2023. Together, these supermarkets had a revenue of close to ** billion euros in 2024.Â
The food retail market in the Netherlands is divided between supermaket and discounter chains. As of 2024, the leading grocery chain in the Netherlands was Albert Heijn, which had a market share of close to ** percent. Its closest competitor, Jumbo, had a market share of just over ** percent. German discounters Lidl and Aldi combined held a share of **** percent. Many smaller (mostly regional) players, such as Plus, Dirk, and Vomar make up the rest of the market.Â
