Business enterprises, non-profit institutions, and public organizations were prorated by the percentage of time that researchers are actually engaged in R&D activities. For universities and colleges, headcounts were used. The number of researchers by type of institution can be found here.
In fiscal year 2023, the research and development (R&D) field in Japan employed ** researchers, down from the previous year. Of all the researchers in the R&D field in fiscal 2023, around **** percent were female, which is a number that has increased steadily over the last decade.
