The homebuyer sentiment in the United States worsened substantially in 2021 and remained negative until September 2025. As of September 2025, the net homebuyer sentiment measured negative **. This means that the share of respondents who thought it was a bad time to buy a home outweighed the share of respondents who said the contrary by ** percent. The decline in sentiment is correlated with the falling homeowner affordability. In 2023, the U.S. homeowner affordability index fell to the lowest level on record.
